What is ABEC and how does it apply to dental handpiece repair ?

ABEC stands for Annular Bearing Engineers' Committee. This committee works to determine the ABEC bearing standards for the Anti-Friction Bearing Manufacturers Association.

The ABEC scale classifies different accuracy and tolerance ranges for bearings. The first column of this table lists the five ABEC bearing Standards ratings in the ABEC scale. The second column of the table lists the corresponding tolerance classes as defined by ISO, the International Organization for Standardization.

The ABEC rating of a bearing is determined by the following aspects in manufacture:

How close the bore, outer diameter, the width and rotating accuracy all are to specification: measured in microns. Obviously, the greater precision of bearing, when adhering to the ABEC9 rating, the higher the quality of bearing.

How do they relate to dental handpiece repair? ABEC7 rated bearings are classified as a Super-precision bearing, and are generally used in most models of handpieces, due to the requirement for precision, ability to handle the extreme high speeds generated, and to maintain a decent level of longevity. ABEC-7 rated bearings are used by most dental handpiece repair specialists, and are satisfactory: but are NOT the best. ABEC9 bearings are classified as an ULTRA-precision bearing, under the ABEC bearing standards ratings: ground to extreme precision, and highly tested to ensure quality.

The relative precision of the ABEC7 bearing to the ABEC9 is due to a number of different and additional processes that the ABEC9 bearings go through: very time-and-cost intensive: to bring them to their relative precison AND to their cost. They cost us over 200% more than ABEC7 bearings: and are used by us for your dental handpiece repair.
