Dental Handpiece Sterilization, Maintenance & Lubrication Seminars: Reducing Dental Handpiece Repairs

The Problem

The single most deleterious factor in proper dental handpiece maintenance is lack of knowledge: of the fundamentals, theory, rational, and methodology of the proper way to treat handpieces. Dental handpieces are not a huge one-time investment (unless you need to buy 2 new ones!) like a chair, or an x-ray system. They are an on-going cost, to replace, repair, clean, lubricate (time and oil), sterilize, and properly regulate. One handpiece can be a cost of over $400 for a new turbine, or $180 repair if your auto-chuck is still good, each 10 months on average. Multiply this by 6 if you have that many on hand. The math is simple. When that average life span reduces by half, your dental handpiece repair costs double. Many of the dental handpiece maintenance factors are covered in our handpiece lubricant and or dental handpiece maintenance sections of this site, but to cover all aspects, as is done in our seminar, is beyond the scope of this publication.

The Solution

Recognizing that there is a real need for ongoing education in the area of proper maintenance of dental handpieces, we have developed a Seminar dealing with handpieces, based on the best technical knowledge available. Through following the guidelines set out in the seminar, your maintenance process for your dental handpieces will become simpler, more efficient, and more effective.

The Agenda
A summary of the aspects covered is on the copy of the C.E. Creditable Certification shown hereunder. In addition to the areas covered on the summarized agenda hereunder, we sample-check your air-stations for proper air-regulation (pressure is CRITICAL for longevity and proper operation of your handpieces), and note any other conditions that may not be up to par in your physical systems, such as condensation and compressor-oil in your airlines. We'll discuss with you, or leave a checklist of any deficiencies that we find for you to follow-up on with your regular clinic-maintenance people.
Purpose & Goals
  1. Increase the life of handpieces, autoclaves, control units and compressors by using proper procedures and techniques, thereby decreasing the effort, time, and money spent on dental handpiece repairs.
  2. Increase efficiency in the dental office maintenance system.
Time
This seminar on dental handpiece maintenance is 55- 75 minutes in length, depending on the number of questions posed, and has thus far been enthusiastically received as an excellent tool in those clinics where we have held it. The seminar is done where it should be: in your office. Times are generally negotiated around the best times for your office, but we recommend a time-slot at the end of the day, so there is no work-pressure to distract from it?s effectiveness. Association-group/work-group Seminars are also available, on the same basis, with minor variances in cost for seminar supplies.
Cost

The value of the seminar is excellent. If the stated methods are followed, they will increase the useful life of your handpiece. Your staff will be more confident regarding all aspects of dental handpiece manitenance, and will have the knowledge to do the right things on a timely basis, the fastest way.You will save money on staff time, on lubricants, and on dental handpiece repair bills. Those dental handpieces will feel better, and have more torque and generally be a better tool before rebuilds are necessary: hence afford a real reduction in your per-client cost. The cost of the Dental Handpiece Maintenance Seminar is set at $150 for all in a clinic. Along with a great amount of information you'll get $80.00 worth of repair coupons to apply against rebuild or overhauls on High or low-speeds. Out-of town Seminars are scheduled: we can set times with several Clinics at the same time in an area. Call to discuss best times, so that we can co-ordinate the meetings.

Value-ADDED BENEFITS - As noted, the Seminar follows the guidelines for continuing Education Credits with the Colleges/Administrative bodies in those areas where we have made it available todate (BC, YUKON, NWT), on a one-to-one basis (1 hour = 1 credit). We have over several hundred individually written feedbacks from over 100 Seminars we've run in western Canada. 98%+ say: "a must for any clinic". 2% say: " it should be taken". It's invaluable for your staff.
